The popularity of the American muscle cars continued to grow in the early 1960s. This marked a trend towards factory performance, which reflected the importance of the youth market. The fierce competition led to an escalation in power that peaked in the early 1970s, with some models offering as much as 450 horsepower.
Unfortunately, the muscle cars performance soon became a liability during this period. The automotive safety lobby, which had been spearheaded by Ralph Nader, declared that offering such power was irresponsible and dangerous for public sale, particularly targeted to young buyers.
With many political, economic, and environmental forces against it, the market for American muscle cars rapidly evaporated.
